Students can either present as a group or choose one person to be their speaker. Have the class vote on which speaker was the most convincing.
I would ask students which author they feel did the best job of influencing the reader, and what suggestions they would make to improve the writing. Using a document camera or overhead projector, I start from scratch, thinking out loud and scribbling down my thoughts as they come.
This has been my number one strategy for teaching students how to become better writers. Have students get into their groups.
After everyone has had a chance to put their name on the chart, look at the results and discuss how people have different views about various topics and are entitled to their opinions. They begin to understand how to take the thoughts that are stirring around in your head and turn them into something that makes sense in writing.
Their reasons can be serious or playful. Explain to students that they are going to play a game that will help them understand how persuasive arguments work.

Instead of using all 5 scenarios on Day 1, choose two or three and have one group support the argument while another group supports the opposite viewpoint. Anytime I give students a major writing assignment, I let them see these documents very early on. Once students have shared, explain that sometimes when you believe in something, you want others to believe in it also and you might try to get them to change their minds.
